WHAT IS NEUROPATHY?

Peripheral neuropathy is an ailment that can come about due to injury to the sensory, motor or autonomic nerves. Nerve deterioration stops the body from communications with muscles, organs, and tissues. It's as though the nerves are having a ... nervous breakdown. Symptoms can include burning, tingling, numbness, dizziness, stabbing pains, loss of balance, pins and needles sensations and much more. Some people have intractable pain, which even the strongest pain killers do not touch, while other people have only mild annoyance. The personal history authors in Cope go into great detail about their symptoms. Some of them may mirror yours.

I’ve seen it written many times, “Peripheral Neuropathy is an ailment that 20 million people have but nobody knows anything about it.” Luckily, that is changing … somewhat. But read on:

A few weeks ago a friend of mine said she was speaking to an intelligent woman and the topic of neuropathy came up. The woman said, “Oh yes. Only diabetics can have neuropathy.” My friend explained that this was incorrect. And still the woman insisted. How wrong she is. There are more than 100 causes of neuropathy. Some people (myself included) are simply told their cause is unknown. One thing is known: Neuropathy can turn your life upside down.

Statistics show 40% to 70% of all diabetics have neuropathy. About 70% of the problems involves pain in the feet, which is why the feet are prominently displayed on the cover. But there is so much more to it than the feet: the heart, the digestive tract are just two organs that can be affected by this disease.

ABOUT THIS BOOK...

Here’s a little hint: much of the book revolves around attitude and how to distract yourself when medications aren’t working. Here is one of my favorite sayings:
“Time’s fun when you’re having flies.” Kermit the Frog
I’m NOT saying you can have fun with your PN, but I am saying you can, with a few techniques, divert yourself and perhaps set aside your pain for a while.

This book is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and by request at all bookstores.
